Deniliquin is a town situated on the Edward River in the Riverina region of New South Wales, Australia. It lies at the intersection of the Riverina and Cobb highways and is approximately 726km southwest of Sydney and 285km north of Melbourne. The first inhabitants of the land were the Baraba Baraba people, who were part of the larger Wiradjuri Nation. The region had an abundance of water and natural resources, making it a popular area for these Indigenous communities. The Baraba Baraba people were known for their hunting and gathering skills, and they also practised agriculture by burning the land to encourage the growth of particular plants. In the early 1800s, European explorers and settlers began to arrive in the region. One of the first was John Oxley, who explored the area in 1817. He was followed by Charles Sturt, who passed through in 1829, and finally, the first squatters arrived in the region in the 1830s. Initially, Deniliquin was a small village known as “The Crossing” as it was the only place to cross the Edward River. In 1845, the town was officially surveyed and named Deniliquin after the Indigenous word “Denilakoon” which means “a place where the water rat nests”. The town quickly grew in size and population due to the fertile land around it, which was suitable for farming and grazing. By the late 1800s, Deniliquin had become an important centre for the region, with a growing number of businesses, a courthouse, post office, banks and hotels. The town was also linked to other parts of the country, with the arrival of the railway in 1876. This had a significant impact on the town, allowing goods and people to be transported in and out of the area more easily. The railway also brought tourists to the region, who were attracted by the natural beauty of the area and the growing popularity of activities such as boating and fishing on the Edward River. Deniliquin was also the site of a significant event in Australian history. On 31st March 1898, 1400 shearers gathered in Deniliquin to form the Australian Workers' Union and to demand better pay and conditions for rural workers. This event, known as the “Deniliquin Uprising”, was one of the most significant events in Australian labour history and marked the birth of the modern trade union movement in Australia. During World War II, Deniliquin played an important role in supporting the war effort. The town was home to several military facilities, including a large army camp and an airfield. Many local men and women also served in the armed forces and contributed to the war effort in various ways. Today, Deniliquin is a vibrant and thriving town, with a population of around 8,000 people. It remains an important centre for the region, with a strong agricultural industry and a growing tourism industry. Visitors to Deniliquin can enjoy a range of activities, including boating and fishing on the Edward River, exploring the local history and culture, and sampling the region's delicious local produce. In conclusion, Deniliquin has a fascinating and rich history, shaped by Indigenous culture, European settlement, the growth of the agriculture industry and important events such as the Deniliquin Uprising and World War II. The town has played an important role in the development of the region and remains an important centre today, attracting visitors from all over the world.
